- I’ve never read a Harlequin romance novel and I probably never will. I would be too afraid that I wouldn’t be able to get those precious hours of my life back.
- My obsession with all things Indian is quickly being overtaken by my love of well-written personal essays and memoirs. And if they’re funny, that’s a bonus. And while we’re talking about personal essays, are you reading Brain, Child Magazine? It is brilliant.
- The hype surrounding some authors puzzles me to no end. Like Margaret Atwood. I like her short stories, but I have never finished a single one of her books. Or Ian McEwan (I really wanted to like Atonement and I know it’s committing Book Snob blasphemy to admit it, but I found it really boring).
- My favorite book (which could change at any given moment, I’m sure) is The Time Traveler’s Wife.
- I don’t like it when my favorite books are turned into movies. It makes me sad when I discover a great little book and then it gets hacked to bits in the movie adaptation. This doesn’t stop me from seeing the movies though, but I am usually disappointed. I will never forgive the powers that be if they screw up the Time Traveler’s Wife or the Persepolis movie.
- And if you haven’t stopped reading out of sheer boredom already, this book nerd is going to ask you a huge favor. I have been doing very well in fighting my internet addiction as of late – I even stopped visiting Facebook and Maya’s Mom (not that I was really all that into them, anyway). Then, that evil Annie (she’s not really evil, I actually quite adore her) invited me to join Shelfari. Now, I’ve already done the LibraryThing thing and wasn’t terribly into it. So I figured I could just take an innocent peek at Shelfari. Sadly, I think it’s much prettier than LibraryThing and really user-friendly and fun. And now I’m all addicted. So, I’m asking you, Internet Pals, to come and join me over there (if you already have a LibraryThing account you can even export your list over there…) You know you want to enable another one of my addictions. C’mon, all the cool kids are doing it. Puleeeeeeeeease? I need more friends over there.
Oh, and if you couldn’t be bothered to join Shelfari (I realize there just aren’t enough hours in the day for all of this internet nonsense sometimes), leave me some book-related comments. I’m always intrigued by what people read and am on the look out for something good to pick up. Thanks and happy Friday!

I’ve read countless, countless Harlequins (but none in the last nine years – I kicked my addiction cold turkey). Nothing really relaxes the brain like a good Harlequin – perfect for post-exam times.
And you didn’t like Atonement? That makes me sad.
I am liking Shelfari, too. I have been dying to get into some decent books lately, and it’s great to see what others recommend. I swear I’ve read more books than is on my shelf there though – it’s just 1. hard to remember, and 2. hard to get time to put them all up ha ha!
I LOVED Time Travelers Wife although all the date jumping made me constantly backing up a page to see what year they were both in
I didn’t know they were making it into a movie but I’ll have to check it out. I ‘ll have to wrack my brain for some good recommendations for you. Right now I’m in my ‘mindless’ reading phase LOL.. But I have Persuasion by Jane Austen up next and just finished Little Men by Louisa May Alcott. I’m trying read some classics mixed in with my novels.
I love shelfari…I love books.
I’d rather get books than clothes and food.
The Time Traveler’s Wife is on my to read list.
I completely agree re: Harlequin romances.
I’m digging Shelfari too.
Atonement didn’t do it for me either. I couldn’t really love any of the characters.
I loooved Time Traveler’s Wife, too!
Oh God how I hate when books get made into movies. I always watch the movies, too. It would probably be good if I would just learn to avoid the movies!
Okay…. now I HAVE to pick up Time Traveler’s Wife….
time traveller’s wife.
best. book. ever.
hands down.
Thanks. Now I’m going to spend money at Knitpicks AND Chapters today.
No way to Harlequins. I couldn’t finish Atonement either. I’ve read a few Margaret Atwood but always feel unfinished after ward. Like I’ve abruptly interrupted someone’s life, stirred it up and left with out contributing anything meaningful or positive. I usually end up feeling guilty and frustrated.
Like intelligent funny? Read Bill Bryson’s A Walk in the Woods. Also his A Short History of Nearly Everything is fascinating! And if you haven’t already – Killer Angels (trust me), Poisonwood Bible, Anna Karenina, Their Eyes Were Watching God, A Prayer for Owen Meany, The Brothers Karamazov, Angle of Repose, Angelas Ashes. Gosh, books. There are too many to list!
1. Ditto
2. Did you love A Suitable Boy? I missed them all so much when I was done reading it. And ditto on Brain Child.
5. Ditto – they usually have to leave out so much. That said, A Room With A View is a great book AND a great movie AND a great movie of a book.
I like Library Thing, but only for the little widget I get to stick on my blog.
I also really like the Time Traveller’s Wife and I share you’re feelings about movies based on books.
My book tastes can vary widely. Sometimes I like to read the lastest intense or controversial book and sometimes I like smut. I think it makes me well-rounded.
LOVED Time Traveller’s Wife. I’m currently reading a book called Under the Banner of Heaven – interesting, but taking everything with a grain of salt. I like to mix it up with chicklit trash now and again. I really liked Crow Lake – Canadian book set in Northern ON – good read for girls from small towns and ‘going home’.
Oh, do I like me some Ian McEwan. Have you tried Saturday? Maybe you’d like it better than Atonement.
I will admit, I have read a Harlequin. On the plane ride back from France (the first time). It was ok. Didn’t get me all hot and bothered, that’s for sure.
I need to read the Time Traveler’s Wife book. You’re the third or fourth person I know who really enjoyed it.
I’m with you….I don’t get hype for some of these authors who are so popular.
My current read…..Cradles of Eminence. Mind blowing but only in way that helps me see Payton differently. Probably not a read most people would enjoy. So I’m not recommending it to you. Though if you wanna try, who am I to say you wouldn’t be interested. Whatta I know? ha!
“Time Traveler’s Wife” is one of my all-time favorites. But my pet peeve is when my favs end up on Oprah’s list. Nothing against Oprah, it just bugs me for some reason.
Have you read Ann-Marie MacDonald (Fall on Your Knees and The Way the Crow Flies?) Excellent.
OK, help me out here. I am ashamed to admit that I haven’t read in a long, long time… Is “Time Traveler’s Wife” something I should check out as my reintroduction to the reading world?
Okay, I read all the time, but haven’t read the TTW…also, I just joined shelfari a couple days ago, but don’t know how to become one of your friends…my home page is under baseballmom. Thanks!
bubandpie – You can’t be nearly as sad as I was that I didn’t like it. I REALLY tried. I did.
Annie – There’s way more on mine too. I just put up the ones I enjoyed reading.
MammaLoves – Atonement seems to be one of those books you either really loved or didn’t get (I’m in this camp). I felt the same way about the characters. They just left me cold.
Amy – Thanks for the recommendations. I love Bill Bryson.
Magpie – A Suitable Boy was one of my favorites. I got so sucked into the story that I was upset when it ended. I felt like I lost some friends.
Slouching Mom – Maybe I will try Saturday…
rimarama – I completely agree about the Oprah thing. And yes, I loved Fall on your knees and the other one is on my list to read.
Secret Agent Mama – YES! It wasn’t a book I expected to really like, but ended up loving it.
I’m so behind on my commenting. But I’m here now, and I have to tell you that there is nothing quite like reading Harlequins out loud when you’re sixteen and among friends. The one phrase I will never forget was “…her pink sweatpants puddled around her ankles…” It’s stuck in my brain forever, taking up space, but we laughed for days over it at the time.
I’m still exploring on Shelfari, and I can’t find the new book I just started which is Richard Russo’s latest. If you haven’t tried him you should, I think you’ll like him.
Any book by Christopher Moore. I rarely laugh out loud at a book, but all of his have had me busting a gut while other people in the room look over at me curiously, looking at me like I’m quite possibly insane. I love it. Also, I just read Promise Not to Tell by Jennifer McMahon. It’s not the best murder/supernatural type novel I’ve ever read, but it’s a good read and fast as well. I could go on and on and on as I read at least a book a week usually, but I’ll go check out Shelfari instead. Cheers!
I’ve got Mr. Roger’s Please Won’t You Be My Neighbour in my head now. Weird.
I’m there babe!
And? We have the same, current, favourite book. I’m really freaked out by the idea of the movie.
The fact that Time Traveler’s Wife is your current fave book, speaks VOLUMES about how alike we are!
i’m reading _Love in the Time of Cholera_ right now. i don’t know why i picked it up, except maybe that it has a “classic” feel to it, and the movie got critical acclaim.
um, it’s really kind of boring. but i am so stubborn that i am sticking with it until it’s done.
